Guide for Couples – What to do in Ubud, Bali During the Rain

Is it worth it to visit Ubud during the rainy season?  Many couples ask this question as they begin to plan their trip and pick a time of year to visit.  While rain is not everyone’s cup of tea, the rainy weather in Ubud does not necessarily need to hinder the two of you from planning a trip during that time.

What is the Rainy Season Like?

First—what exactly is the rainy season in Ubud like?  It means unpredictable and heavy rainfall at all times of the day.  The rainy season in Ubud lasts from about October to April.  During these months you can expect light spurts of rain, 24 hours straight of rain, flooded roads, and an overall dampness in the air.  The rain can happen at any time, so it is important that you pack accordingly.  Bring rain gear, plastic flip flops, and even those plastic, one-use ponchos.

What to Do (and not do!) in the Rainy Season

Beach holidays are not your best bet during these months, so visiting Ubud is actually a great alternative.  You’ll get to see the greenery of the hillsides and rain forests in all their splendor.  The terraced rice paddies, the bright lotus flowers rising out of ponds, the lush surroundings don’t stop no matter which way you look.

Ubud during the rainy season is the perfect time to settle in, relax, and enjoy each day for what it brings.  Rather than meticulously planning long day trips, hikes, or trips that may get washed out and leave you disappointed, stick close to your home base and see what there is to do near you.  That may be daily yoga, an Indonesian cooking class, language lessons, or reading at a cafe listening to the rain drip off the leaves.

Indoor activities are going to be better suited to the wetter months for couples.  Try and decide what the two of you love to do together, or something new you want to learn.  A nighttime massage in your private villas is a perfect option for a stormy evening, and a Bali morning yoga session is a practice of learning to remain harmonious together.

Make sure you plan ahead while you are there and, if roads are washed out, you are not stuck at your accommodations with no food or anything to do.   Learn to be all right with cozy days indoors, just the two of you.

Ubud in the wet months can be just as exciting and enriching as the rest of the year for travelling couples—just remember that although you cannot change the weather, you can adapt and enjoy your Bali experience no matter what the sky has planned out for that day.
